Key themes of Kim Stanley Robinson's
The Years of Rice and Salt include science and progress. His alternate world develops similar to our own. Technology advances at the same pace and with much of the same result, despite differences in location. Many of his fictional characters are based on real scientists, philosophers, inventions and tools, or theories. Our Science and Technology section investigates elements of Robinson's novel pertaining to science and technology.
